Achieving Your Ideal Capsule Wardrobe Is Easier Than You Think!
5 Steps to Putting Together Your Perfect Capsule Wardrobe
Unless you are a social media influencer who constantly gets new clothes shipped to them, creating outfits every morning can be daunting and draining. If you are the type of person who has every intention of making a creative, eye catching outfit with that pleated skirt in the back of your closet but can never seem to get around to it, creating a capsule wardrobe might be for you.
Capsule wardrobes can be a great tool to help you simplify your morning routine and save money, instead of constantly buying new pieces to keep up with trends. To create a capsule wardrobe, you’ll select a few key pieces of clothing that can be used to create multiple outfits and that can be easily mixed and matched. Say goodbye to looking at your closet in the morning and thinking “I have nothing to wear!” With a capsule wardrobe, you can create a variety of outfits that you actually want to wear.
Step 1: Evaluate Your Current Closet
The first step in creating your capsule wardrobe is by evaluating what you already have. It is not realistic, economical, or environmentally friendly to throw everything out and start from scratch. Instead, try on every piece of clothing in your closet – yes, every piece – and take note of how they make you look and feel. Do you love the look of that classic wool sweater but avoid wearing it because it is too uncomfortable and itchy? It might be time to donate it to free up room for something that you can actually wear. Be sure to check for holes and damage too! The goal is to create a wardrobe that you can wear and reuse all season long and garments that are on their last legs probably won't make the cut.
Step 2: Create Your Color Palette
The next step is creating a color palette. This will help ensure all your pieces coordinate and look good together. Narrow it down to 2-3 main colors to use as the foundation for your wardrobe. While you probably picture beige, white, and black, when you think of a capsule wardrobe, a capsule wardrobe actually does not have to be boring or simple! So, if you love to wear jewel tones, create your color palette off of that!
Step 3: Plan for the Season
A good capsule wardrobe should be as practical as it is flattering. If you create a wardrobe consisting entirely of light and airy skirts in the rainy season, you simply aren’t going to reach for those outfits. That is why we recommend checking your weather forecast before planning your outfits. This will help you get an idea of what you need to prepare for and what you need to include such as waterproof boots or a rain coat.
Step 4: Add in New Staples
Once you have a good idea of what you have and what you need to add in, it is time to go shopping! We recommend adding in high quality, timeless, and flattering items to allow for the greatest versatility and longevity. But remember to have fun with this! To liven up your new capsule wardrobe, we recommend refreshing your closet by adding in 1 new pair of pants, 1 skirt, and 2 to 3 tops. This will give you plenty of pieces to play with and mix and match.
For example, our Paulo Cropped Flare Jeans, Sanna Pleated Skirt, Bridgitte Top, Geneo Tunic, and Ducilla Top can all be mixed and matched and dressed up and down to create a variety of looks.
Step 5: Create Your New Outfits
While it may be tempting to skip this last step, it is important to actually figure out how your pieces will work together. You don’t have to come up with all the combinations right away, but you should at least have seven variations to start with, one for every day of the week. That way when you wake up in the morning, you don’t have to stress about putting together an outfit, you’re simply selecting one from a pre-made “menu.” You may even want to take pictures of your core seven outfits to refer back to so you don’t get stuck in a rut with wearing the same one all the time!
